US–India Defence Ties Emerge as Cornerstone of Strategic Partnership, Says Ambassador Sergio Gor
US Ambassador Sergio Gor highlights defence cooperation as the most strategic pillar of US-India relations, citing joint exercises, trade expansion, and the Quad partnership. The evolving alliance reflects deepening military, economic, and technological collaboration between the two nations.
In an interview with Span Magazine, Gor was asked which areas of US-India cooperation hold the greatest potential to drive innovation, economic growth, and technological progress. He responded that defence and security cooperation stands at the forefront, emphasizing that the US-India Major Defense Partnership continues to deepen through a new 10-year framework. This includes enhanced defense industrial cooperation, science and technology collaboration, and operational coordination.
Gor further noted that economic investment and trade expansion offer equally transformative potential. Referring to Donald Trump’s vision, he said the goal is to facilitate bilateral trade in a manner that creates unprecedented opportunities for American businesses and workers. He added that India’s growing economy and massive infrastructure needs align with American expertise in energy, aviation, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure, describing the situation as mutually beneficial and a “win-win” for both nations.
Reaffirming India’s status as a Major Defense Partner, Gor said defence cooperation remains one of the brightest aspects of bilateral relations. He underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen US-India military interoperability through joint exercises such as Malabar, Tiger Triumph, and Cope India.
Gor also highlighted the role of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), stating that both India and the United States are part of this strategic partnership, which ensures their security interests remain robust and aligned. He explained that diplomacy, defense exercises, and military sales form the three core pillars sustaining strong and continued defense cooperation, predicting a natural strengthening of ties if these elements are maintained.
The growing military partnership was further demonstrated by the 16th edition of Exercise Vajra Prahar 2026, a premier joint Special Forces engagement between the Indian Army and the United States Army. The exercise was conducted at the Special Forces Training School in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh, from February 23 to March 15.
India-US defence cooperation operates under the “New Framework for IndiaUS Defence Cooperation,” which was renewed for ten years in 2015. In 2016, the relationship was formally designated as a Major Defence Partnership. Subsequently, on July 30, 2018, India was elevated to Tier-1 status under the US Department of Commerce’s Strategic Trade Authorization license exception.
The developments underscore a steadily advancing strategic alliance, where defense, economic collaboration, and shared geopolitical interests continue to reinforce one of the most critical bilateral relationships in the global landscape
